The Right To Compensate The Athletes - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 975 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2019/05/30 Category Career Essay Level High school Tags: Should College Athletes Be Paid Essay Did you like this example? Whether it be watching football on Saturday afternoons in Fall or trying to predict the perfect bracket for March Madness, many Americans seek to be entertained through college sports. In fact, college sports, namely football and basketball, generate billions of dollars of revenue each year (Edelman, 2017). At the heart of this revenue are the student-athletes who give everything on their respective playing fields, without compensation. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Right To Compensate The Athletes" essay for you Create order Some play as a means of funding their education, while others do it for a chance to compete at the next level. Regardless of the reasons as to why each athlete plays, these student-athletes all sacrifice their time, personal autonomy, and physical health and therefore, should be entitled to some compensation for their efforts (Edelman, 2017). College athletes sacrifice countless hours of their time practicing and competing in their particular sport. College football players contribute an average of 43.3 hours per week to their sport (Edelman, 2014). Thus, the time invested in the student-athleters sport is more than that of a full-time job. In combination with their classes, this leaves very little time for student-athletes. Furthermore, the schedule of games and consequent travel to and from said games often entails athletes to miss classes (Edelman, 2014). Between practices, games, and academic life, student-athletes are afforded marginal time of their own; time that could be used to work a job. Moreover, strict rules and regulations for student-athletes warrant constant oversight by coaches, prohibiting many freedoms afforded to non-student athletes. Coaches provide itineraries for players dictating their activities each day (Karcher, 2017). Every aspect of a student-athleters life is scrutinized by coaches as disciplinary action and the potential loss of scholarship looms for those who violate rules (Karcher, 2017). Athleters course schedules are directed by discouraging enrollment in courses that may interfere with their athletic schedule (Karcher, 2017). Until recently, even the amount of food that may be provided to athletes by colleges was limited by NCAA rules (Edelman, 2017). NCAA bylaws and each universityrs athletic program govern student-athleters lives in a manner that is clearly unprecedented and unfair, to say the least. In addition to their sacrifices of time and personal autonomy, student-athletes sacrifice their personal health just as professional athletes do. Every time that an athlete steps onto the practice field or performs in a game, they put themselves at risk of injury. The inherent risks involved with sports range from sprains and concussions to broken bones, paralysis, and in some cases, even death. In spite of the risk of injury, student-athletes continue to compete. The athletic trainers at the universities may provide some treatment but in the case of negligence or improper treatment, it is the student that suffers and who is responsible for the medical bills (Walsh, 2013). Athletic-related medical bills are the responsibility of the student who cannot work due to his or her competing. As college athletes, unlike their professional counterparts, are not classified as employees, they are not entitled to workers compensation or similar benefits (Karcher, 2017). The NCAA does not help to cover the costs of medical bills until they exceed $90,000 (Walsh, 2013). Put into perspective, if an athlete were to get seriously injured competing for their university, then they could end up spending the equivalent of a college education or more for treatment. Despite the sacrifices that these athletes make to represent their particular school, there are a plethora of people who advocate against the paying of college athletes as many of them already receive scholarships covering tuition, room, and board (Wilbon, 2013). However, unlike non-student athletes on an academic scholarship, student-athletes must sign a commitment to the school (Walsh, 2013). Moreover, these students may work a job, whereas athletes are restricted to the type of jobs they may work and prohibited from holding jobs during their competitive season (Garcia, 2014). Although student-athletes receive scholarships, their value to the universities they represent typically exceed the value of the scholarship benefits they receive as the athletes are core members of the schoolrs marketing team (Edelman, 2014). With yearly revenues in the millions of dollars, it would only seem right to compensate the athletes that put in the time and effort to produce such revenue (Edelman, 2 017). Finally, student-athletes more closely resemble employees than students. The control exercised by the NCAA and a schoolrs athletic program in combination with the scholarship agreement which serves as a contract for the athletic services performed on behalf of the school constitutes employee status under common law (Karcher, 2017). As such, student-athletes should be entitled to compensation relative to their value to the school as well as entitlements such as workers compensation. In conclusion, student-athletes at the college level should be paid relative to the revenue they produce. As an athletic program thrives and reaps the rewards, schools should do a much better job of compensating the players who make it possible. At the very least, schools should recognize players as employees entitling them to such benefits as workers compensation in order to protect their well-being. References Edelman, M. Annotated Bibliography On The Landscape Of Transcription

LANDSCAPE OF TRANSCRIPTION IN HUMAN CELLS INTRODUCTION The Encyclopedia of DNA Elements (ENCODE) is a project designed to compare and contrast the repertoire of RNAs produced by the human cells and cross verify with other methods like NGS. After a five year start-up since the beginning of the ENCODE project just 1% of the human genome has been observed and what was achieved was just the confirmation of the results of previous studies. RNA has functions of coding, regulation, decoding, and gene expression. RNA highlights the sequential output from genomes which gives the genetic information. They define the cells regulatory capabilities by their synthesis, translation, transport, processing, and modification. This project also aims to evaluate the degree of modification of the identified transcript at their 3’ and 5’ termini in the predicament of polyadenylation or 7-methyl guanosine cap. A genes isoform expression limits the boundary of minimalistic expression strategy which results in general behavior of genes to express simultaneous multiple isoforms. The results of gene expression range nearly at ten to twelve expressed isoforms for every gene in every cell line. This study shows that 6% of the entire annotated non-coding and coding gene transcripts are overlapping with small RNAs. Highly specific subcellular positioning is found for both unannotated annotated short RNA. METHODS In this paper, the necessary RNA data set was generated by subcellular fractionation of the 15 cell lines considered to analyse the human transcriptome. Thus isolated RNAs were classified into two categories long (200 nucleotides) and short (200 nucleotides) and the long transcripts were further separated into polyadenylated and non-polyadenylated transcripts. Data set Generation The procedure followed for data set generation in this paper is mentioned below: †¢ 15 cell lines were acquired for the purpose of this experiment. Mentorship Developing A Positive Learning Environment...

Mentorship can defined as a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps to guide a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. A mentor is a collaborative partner who is a role model and motivator providing support, help, enthusiasm, inspiration, and nurturing the clinical setting. â€Å"A mentor is also an active listener who will provide a safe, non-judgmental, friendly, and creative atmosphere for the new nurse† (Nursing Mentor, 2010, p. 1). The purpose of the Clinical Mentorship Committee is to develop a positive learning environment for nurses of all backgrounds and all different levels of experience. My thoughts are that it will not only be the mentors and their mentees who†¦show more content†¦It can also help decrease the amount of staff turnaround. Ever since Florence Nightingale established the nursing profession in the 1800’s, experienced nurses have been taking amateur nurses under their w ings and teaching them to become independent, caring and intelligent nurses. Body of the Paper Nursing is a practice discipline which requires ongoing development of knowledge and skills in order to provide quality care to patients. In order for this to occur, nurses need to develop certain skills to adapt to a continuously expanding knowledge-based practice. A large part of the learning process is done clinically, which for nurses right out of school requires the need for a supervised orientation with mentor who will provide sufficient and effective knowledge and skills these new professionals. At this time my facility has a three month orientation period where the new nurses are bounced around for lack of a better word. We have all been a part of this and are now in the place where we have a bigger voice and we are being heard that this is something that we can change to not only improve employee satisfaction but can also decrease the current turnaround rate that is increasing as the years go by. There have been a few of us that have tossed ideas around in the past ab out what we could do to implement this type of program. The hospital now recognizes that going from the classroom and a controlled clinical setting is completely

No matter how successful business might become, one could never be satisfied and continully push to do something bigger than the previous one, better and greater. When some one is having the passion for something, they never fed up with the same and have the same excitement for every time. The leader should have this trait in order to grow. Innovation Any system is having finite resources, assets and infinite expansion in populationlike business, like all of humanity. If you possess below four traits and you enhance these qualities, you can begin your journey towards democratic leadership. There are certain traits which makes a democratic leader easier. If leader possesses the four traits and can enhance these qualities, the leader can easily begin the journey towards democratic leadership. Intelligence Leadership styles should fulfil the requirements of the leaders to be very intelligent, sharp and competent. Democratic leadership is one of the top styles among many, that requires the intelligence trait. A leader should possess the intelligence quality by which decisions will be taken quickly or the immediate basis. Intelligence helps in order to make decisions regarding getting their work done through others. Creative Creativity or innovation is the key to attraction. A democratic leader, should have the trait creative flair. Leadership framework the ideas the requirement of innovation and collaboration. The leader must have the trait to help other members and subordinates of their team, in order to innovate and create . Creativity some time considered as an innate trait, but everyone has this ability to improve the characteristics. [10]A leader can easily improve their own creativity and subordinates creativity by establishing the environment which is right within the organization. Creativity improves when people started speaking their mind freely, openly and feel the ideas they have respected. The leader should be creative and innovative, these traits make them an effective leader. Fairness Fairness will be shown when, people will start to speak their mind in front of everyone. Mainly decisions are taken through the majority of votes, in this situation leader can show fairness[11]. There is the clear situation of fairness, unfavorable and the unapproachable situations are absent in this trait. The democratic style must be clear, fair, open and consistent in nature with the leaders who are bearing the brunt of the responsibilities. The leader should be able to keep the distance from the emotional, personal and rational thinking situations[12]. Fairness meant to be transparent. If the leader allows subordinates in order to understand their own thinking process, innovations and decisions, the leader shows them that the decision is based on fairness, rationality and not unfair feelings. Strengths of the democratic model This model includes more strengths than other models. This democratic leadership can motivate employees in order to perform more effectively, because they are getting the chance to implement their decisions. This is the fact, which is probably the important one due to the potential to work[13]. Dr. Mahatir Bin Mohammad used this model because of the employee motivation and to develop the country by this commonly accepted and agreed leadership style. High morale: This style includes the sky-high enthusiasm of the leaders and subordinates. There are no complaints, misconceptions and bitterness all have been cleared due to the great communication channe[14]l. All the involved parties in getting the maximum satisfaction in this style. This will result in the decreased number of employee turnover. Creation of more Efficiency and Productivity: The employees are involved in the process of decision making, which ultimately causes to increased efficiency . The employee takes initiative in order to find out the new techniques to increase work performance. By this work will be performed better and saves the time as well[15]. Consequently, this will cause to increase or boost in productivity. If productivity increases in the country than it will be good for the leader. This will be effective and efficient for the leaders. Reduction of friction: This approach allows Dr. Mahatir Bin Mohammad in order to use the innovative and new ideas of his subordinates and to gain credit[16]. It will reduce the amount of tension between subordinates and the leaders. It will play an important role in the long process and avoid possible conflicts. Reduced employee turnover- l The leaders always wish that, their subordinate stays with their team until reconstruction of the organization do not need. Therefore, its important to focus on feelings and empowerment. In the situation where, employee feels empowered through the development of leadership, the company will experience lower employee turnover rates. This situation will be a beneficial situation[17] The weaknesses of democratic leadership style The process of making or taking any decision in democratic leadership, will take some time that subordinate could become much devoted to their work itself. This is the evidence that, seeking consultation in order to take the decision slows down the process. This will become serious troubles and obstacles[18]. According to James (2015), This leadership style causes to the pseudo-participation. Under this style of leadership, group members do participate, take initiatives and perform well even in the absence of the leader. However, this vital absence might cause to completely different results, when the group members are not used to this participative style[19]. The character, participation and [20]maturity of any group members will become the powerful factors. Productivity is lower in the democratic one than autocratic one. These weaknesses have been faced by the leaders.[21] Conclusion From this study it has been concluded that the leader includes the various and unique characteristics. Leadership is of various types. It depends upon the public and the situation, which type of leadership style any leader chooses. The Contemporary and transformative leadership style are present in the economy.
